PREVIOUS SENIOR BRUNCH EVENTS

Dementia & Alzheimer's

Lisa Herbert-Meritt, Lead at Carilion Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia Management Home Care Program, provided valuable information about dementia at our October event. Lisa described the differences between some of the most common, of over a hundred, types of dementia. We learned how stress and other situations can mimic dementia symptoms and how one can find joy in their journey with dementia! Our breakfast buffet included sausage and bacon potato casseroles, steel cut oatmeal with all the fixins', lemon and chocolate cakes, cookies, muffins, and fresh fruit.

Back from Summer Break!

Jason Dilg from Rise and Shine Botanicals (111 Main St., Radford) talked about how plants can be used to support good health at our September event. After guests and members enjoyed a hearty breakfast of steel-cut oatmeal, and loaded baked potatoes, we learned what the "buzz" behind hemp and CBD oil is all about.

 A-MAYzing Tales of Radford History

At our May event, Scott Gardner from Glencoe Museum told fascinating stories about local Radford history. Tales included descriptions of the loving relationship between Confederate Brigadier General Wharton and Nannie Radford Wharton through letters written between them. Bits from their letters, written during the Civil War era, were shared by Gardner and shed light on political perspectives and marital relationships during that time period. Prior to Gardner's presentation, we partook in a delectable "loaded potato bar" with loads of fixings, including ham, sausage gravy, cheese, chili, and veggies. Together with oatmeal, drinks, and an array of bakery and dessert items, there was something for everyone.

Exploration of Wildwood Park in April

The house was packed at this April event. Nancy Kent presented photograph slides of interesting wildlife found right in our back yard at Wildwood Park. Clyde Kessler assisted in answering technical questions about wildlife and the wonderful Prima Donna's graced us with their beautiful music once again.

Dirt Cheap Healthy Meals and Senior Nutrition in March

A Carilion dietitian presented valuable information including recent research on healthy eating and diet. She also provided considerations for those on a diabetic diet. Everyone got to take home a list of "dirt cheap" recipe ideas of healthy and affordable meal ideas.

Info for Seniors & Caregiver + live music filled the house in February

Beautiful live music by the PrimaDonna's accompanied our breakfast of biscuits & gravy, hash brown cakes, steel-cut oatmeal, and cakes. Shannon Hammons, from NRV Agency on Aging, presented on the services available to senior citizens and caregivers. Topics of discussion included senior abuse, scams directed at seniors, health benefits, and upcoming programs.

Sound financial advice and some foot-tapping at our January event

Picture
Thank you to Financial Advisor, Onassis Burress, our special speaker at January's event! And thank you to The Prima Donna's for blessing us with their beautiful musical duet!

Single digit temperatures did not affect the enjoyment of each other's company and of the delicious warm meal, which included sausage-hash brown casserole, steel-cut oatmeal with all the fixings, and bakery-fresh donuts (thank you Mr. Burress).

We discussed the different combinations of investing that are the most fitting for particular age groups, and we learned about financial terms and strategies that stemmed from initial questions from the audience.

BINGO! Everybody won at our December event

It was a jolly ol' time, which included Chef Tim's demonstration on how to make a delicious and healthy spiced Christmas smoothie, a chef-inspired breakfast with pancakes, bacon-egg casserole and more, and several rounds of BINGO. We'll see you in 2019!

Senior Safety was the HOT TOPIC at our November event

Thank you to Cpl. Emily Hite, from Radford Police Department, who presented on how to prevent being scammed and what signs to look out for. It was an open discussion with valuable discussion shared by several participants.

Back in Full Force After a Summer Break

At our Sept. 10 event, Garry Ross, Health & Fitness Consultant, taught us several non-weight bearing exercises, which aim to increase range of motion and quality of life. Several attendees felt inclined to try them out! Prior to the presentation, we shared in fellowship and ate a delicious meal of biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, oatmeal, fresh fruit, orange juice and coffee.

Last One Until the Fall!

Our third and last event before the summer was on May 7, and once again we were graced with The Prima Donnas. Another special treat was piano playing by Fran Tieleman! Vicar Rebecca spoke a little about the history and culture behind the Gullah culture and songs, and then Fran played a few of them for all of us to sing along to. It was a foot-tapping great time! We indulged in a special brunch with biscuits and gravy, oatmeal, fresh fruit, cake, and many other delicious items. Our organizer is traveling until the fall, so we'll pick up where we left off in September. See you then!

Just When We Thought it Couldn't Get Any Better

Our second event on April 10 was a true "shin-dig" of a time, with a special performance by "The Prima Donnas," who graced us with their beautiful talent of music and song. We enjoyed the same types of foods as last time, and had an amazing time together.

One of the questions we discussed was: What was a favorite food growing up, and which food did you dislike? We learned about our favorite foods, and Vicar Rebecca shared a very special treat: ginger snap cookies from a secret family recipe!

Our First Brunch was a Delight!

We had a lovely time at our first meeting on March 19, 2018! "What was one of your fondest memories growing up?" This and other questions made our conversations fascinating and beautiful! We also "broke bread" in enjoying oatmeal with all the "fixin's", fresh fruit, breakfast casserole, ham biscuits, and more.
