Thursday Night Book Study

Picture
All are welcome to join us for a book study of Archbishop Oscar Romero: The Making of a Martyr. We will meet via Zoom (click here) four Thursdays at 7pm starting February 9th.
Who is Oscar Romero, assassinated in 1980 while saying mass, beatified by Pope Francis in 2015, a man Latin Americans already claim as Saint Romero of America? Based on interviews with some of Romero's seminary mates and siblings, the author takes painstaking effort to convey the context in which this old-school cleric emerged as an audacious voice of the voiceless. That he did so is remarkable; Vatican officials named him archbishop confident he would remain silent, rein in activism, and ruffle no status-quo feathers. How and why Romero defied expectations ranks among the most compelling faith stories of the late twentieth century.

Reading Schedule:
Feb 23: Chapter 10-Chapter 13
Mar 2: Chapter 14-Chapter 16

Look around to see our additional interior updates including painted trim throughout the lower level and new divider curtains in the kitchen. Exterior updates include new awnings, new siding on the gables, and fresh paint on window frames.

Charlie Thompson, professor of cultural anthropology and documentary studies at Duke University, spoke on “A Search for Rural Justice: An intimate portrait of the joys and hardships of rural life, as one man searches for community, equality, and tradition in Appalachia."

Charlie gave a brilliant presentation. His message to us in creating change in our environment was to move forward with a sense of purpose and positivity, rather than guilt. We enjoyed snacks and drinks and several door prizes were given away.

Bilingual Music at May 5 Service

"Cinco de Mayo" happened to land on a Sunday in 2019, so we took the opportunity to appreciate the Hispanic culture and to include bilingual (Spanish/English) liturgical music during the worship service. The service followed the usual format in English, except some of the music was bilingual and lyrics were provided to help follow along.

Helping Victims of Disasters

The 2017 season saw some of the worst hurricanes on record. From Texas to the Dominican Republic, Lutheran Disaster Response is there.

As a church, we’ve been standing by our neighbors who have already been affected, and we are ready to assist in additional locations as disaster strikes. The road to recovery is long, and Lutheran Disaster Response will be there to accompany those affected in every phase.

Your gifts are used entirely (100 percent) for direct response. Together, we can help provide immediate and long-lasting support for those whose homes have been devastated or who have been otherwise affected by hurricanes.

Donations are accepted year-round: Give now to support survivors of disasters.

Mindfulness & "Enduring in Times of Turmoil"

Picture
On Nov. 19, 2017, CLC held a wellness discussion event, led by Dr. Patricia Shoemaker from Radford University, on the topic "Enduring in Times of Turmoil." Guests enjoyed drinks, snacks, and a raffle at this free wellness event. Congrats to the Irwin's on winning the prize!

Ideas discussed included: what can we do to weather the seemingly growing turmoil around us?  How can we manage challenges in our lives and be open and available to those who need us? Can we, in our own way, build peace and commitment to the common good?  We explored the science behind mindfulness practice and learned examples of practices we can carry into our daily lives.

Session 1: May 21, 2017

How do you keep your body healthy?

There are obvious answers to that question. We could all think of several off the top of our head… drink water, eat good food, get rest, and exercise.
There is so much more than these obvious answers in regards to physical body health.
·         What is your concept of your physical body?
·         What has happened to your physical body? Illness, neglect, socio-economic impact, or abuse—our bodies can store and house pain and emotion as a physical entity.
·         How does one begin to heal that reality?
·         How do you inhabit your body when that body has known pain?
·         What does one do when the sensation of exhaustion permeates down deeply to the bones and into the muscles, fatigue sets in, and the nervous system is depleted?

Session 2: June 4, 2017

How do you talk to yourself?

There are obvious answers to that question. We could all think of several off the top of our head… drink water, eat good food, get rest, and exercise.

Christ Lutheran
Wellness Ministry

Picture
We believe the life of faith is lived within the Healer’s Hands.
Throughout the Gospels, we see Jesus working to heal people. He cures physical maladies, mends broken relationships, and forgives sin.
In other words, Jesus is about holistic healing, about redeeming our entire selves.
Our Healer’s Hands ministry offers an approach to holistic healing through physical, spiritual, relational, and financial lenses.

Health Kit Donations Appreciated!

Guess where our last Health Kit donations went? We found out they went to help victims in the Ukraine-- that's wonderful news!

Thank you all who gave items or monetary donations by 9/11 to help get our Health Kit mission stocked up! Health Kits are given to those experiencing disastrous and emergency situations. For anyone moved to continue helping, we accept the following:
  • Light-weight bath-size towels (between 20” x 40” and 52” x 27”), dark color recommended
  • Bath-size bars of soap equaling 8 to 9 oz., any brand, in original wrapping
  • Adult-size toothbrushes in original packaging
  • Sturdy combs
  • Metal nail clippers (attached file optional)

On Sunday, September 11th, after worship, a group of caring individuals packed the personal care kits shown in the picture above to benefit Lutheran World Relief, which distributes these kits in times of disaster across the globe. Participants who helped put kits together received "God's Work, Our Hands" shirts printed by Old Lutheran. Wearing these and working together was a great reflection of our unity in Christ's service with Lutherans across the country.
